Nick Hampton

Nick Hampton
Nick Hampton is a typically boring, definitely not cool, mild-mannered accountant just happens to be in the right place at the right time to get a start in the amazing world of rock ’n’ roll and make international record labels his home for more than two decades.

Sounds like an unlikely outline for a really riveting piece of pulp fiction, doesn’t it? The Musical Adventures of a Quiet Bean Counter. Except that it’s not fiction, it’s true, and Nick is the bean counter, though perhaps not your usual one. His memoir, NICK OF TIME: MY LIFE AND CAREER ALL ON THE RECORD is his story, and his life.

His career in the music industry started in London, took him all over Europe, to America, Australia and New Zealand, and gave him executive jobs with giant labels like EMI and CBS, as well as some smaller ones that punched way above their weight when it came to hits and hit-makers. He ended up spending forty years in the music business, seeing mostly the good, occasionally the bad, and sometimes the downright ugly.

Le Château: A Very French Affair is Nick's first novel. He lives in retirement with his wife in the south of France.

Nick Hampton’s memoir charts his stellar career in the glory days of rock ’n’ roll with giant labels like EMI and CBS that took him from London in the Swinging Sixties through Europe and the USA to Sydney, where he was the managing director of EMI Australia.

NICK OF TIME: MY LIFE AND CAREER, ALL ON THE RECORD is a fascinating walk down music memory lane as Hampton recalls the times he spent with great artists such as Petula Clark, Elton John, The Kinks, Tony Hatch, Jackie Trent, Donovan, Sandie Shaw, Johnny Cash, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Vera Lynn, Slim Dusty, Joy McKean, Glenn Shorrock, Jimmy Barnes, Iva Davies, Neil Finn, Richard Clapton, Jenny Morris and Smoky Dawson.

He also takes readers deep inside the global pop/rock music business, what he describes as “mostly the good, occasionally the bad, and sometimes the downright ugly”, remembering leviathans like Lew Grade, Dick James, Clive Davis and the late Ted Albert, his visionary friend behind The Easybeats and AC/DC’s climb to the top.

When a well-to-do extended English family find their perfect escape from the pressures of the city, a 17th Century château awaiting renovation in a quiet corner of rural France, everything is très bon. They are welcomed into the commune, make new friends, and enjoy the peaceful, rustic lifestyle – until a powerful politician with a Machiavellian agenda sets out to ruin them. Against a backdrop of intrigue, blackmail, and skeletons of Nazi collaboration from World War II, the evils of corruption envelop their Gallic dream in Le Château: A Very French Affair. It’s both a cautionary tale and a spot-on study of what can happen when friendly, well-meaning outsiders – in this case a clan of Londoners – try to become insiders in a land with a very foreign culture. The author, Nick Hampton, a dual English-Australian national, wrote the novel from a position of great insight: his own home in the south of France.
